These ingredients are mixed together at your house or business. Hot liquid asphalt is applied to gravel base. The gravel is applied. Stones are then rolled & compacted. It is not uncommon for two layers to be installed. Tar & chip pavement surface are not new. Many counties used this surface on secondary & rural roads. Tar & chip surfaces were standard on virtually every highway in the USA prior to 1935. Tar & chip surface are a wonderful alternative to asphalt paving.
